To our Child Sponsors...

Thank you for your monthly support for these beautiful children! We had the privilege of giving out a number of presents from their sponsors. They were thrilled to receive their own gifts! So, big thank you to those sponsors who sent these gifts.

Each child that enters the program with Harvest Aid also receives a 'Welcome Pack' filled with goodies. There have been some really big smiles from the children as they receive these packs.

We want to encourage sponsors to feel free to send letters or postcards to our offices - we will then pass it on to the children. The children love hearing from the people who support them.

Feed a Friend

Harvest Aid's “Feed a Friend Project” is aimed at making children aware of those who have far less than they do. They are encouraged to help feed someone of more or less their own age. The project requires participation of a school to both inform the learners of the needs of others and to help distribute and then collect the coin donation bottles. HA supplies a DVD and other materials on request to schools who want to participate.

At a recent project at Weltevreden Primary School, the children took the collection bottles home over the winter holiday period and returned them when the schools reopened. The response was wonderful. A special thanks to Mr. Morton, Ms. Moldenhauer and to all the teachers and pupils who participated (and of course to the parents who donated). Usually the project only takes about two weeks.

It is important that children become aware of the plight of other less fortunate children in South Africa. For many, hearing that there are children who go to bed hungry almost every night, is a real eye opener. The concern and compassion we see is very encouraging. Filling the bottles with coins (and notes) makes a real difference for the children we feed, and gives those participating in the project a sense of accomplishment knowing that they are doing something rather than nothing.

HA hopes to do more than 20 Feed a Friend Projects per year. Anyone interested in getting involved can call Evangeline at 011-664-6149

MacDonalds trip

We had the opportunity to take just a few children from the Township Rietvallei to McDonalds for a Happy Meal and an Ice cream. The children loved playing on the playground equipment and with their little happy meal toys (the Gingerbread man and Rumplestiltskin) The whole ride home all the volunteer drivers heard was the Rumplestiltskin toy going “Hhahahahaaa”!

Going out to somewhere as ordinary as McDonalds really meant a lot to the children and something they will remember for a long time! Thank you to the Teachers from Mony Fishers Swim School who sponsored the trip.

So, what can I do?

At some time or other, most people get to the point where they ask: What can I do? Often the motivation soon dissipates unless they find something practical that they can do to help. Here are ten ideas of what you could do to help change lives:

News from the Field
By Thulani Mahlangu, HA Community Worker

Greetings to all our sponsors. I would like to share with you what I am experiencing in the field while I am visiting the families in our program.

Often I would enter a home and find that there is no food. I would find only the granny with five kids and they would be getting no income - no pension or foster care grant. The reason for this is often that they do not even have the money for transport to go and apply for a grant. The granny may also be so sick that she cannot even walk. This is when I step in and help and make sure that the granny - and the children - get the help they need.

Thulani with a family while delivering their new mattresses.Another reason for not receiving grants is often due to the fact that these grannies do not know how to go about applying for a grant. These grannies need people like me and you to help them. They also face other difficulties for example, some of the children do not want to obey their granny. In these cases I try to take the child aside and talk to him/her nicely to try to help solve the situation.

A big thank you to all our sponsors! Without your support we would not have been able to make a difference!
