Welcome 2010!
We look forward to this coming year as Harvest Aid continues to grow and to strive to live up to our mandate of “making a real difference in the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children”.
This year we want to see even greater service delivery to our normal projects. We would like to increase the number of children we feed daily to over 1 000. Even though it is still summer we are already planning for another successful “Winter chill” project - our blanket and warm clothing drive which will kick off in March. We also are trusting to have 100 children fully sponsored through our Child Sponsorship Programme by the end of this year (more info available on our website: www.harvestaid.org)
In April we are partnering with a local church and have a soccer clinic in the Rietvallei township with orphaned and underprivileged children. We know that holiday activities are few and far between for these children. We want to give the opportunity to have fun in a safe and caring environment. We also want to begin projects with Granny-led families where training and resources are given for them to start and maintain their own veggie gardens.
We realise that we will never be able to reach our goals and planned projects without our faithful sponsors and volunteers! So we really look forward to what we can do together! Make this a year of service to the community and especially to vulnerable children.

Mpho
Part of trying to change the lives of children in need, means that we go beyond just meeting basic needs to really provide services for those children in our projects. Recently we came across little Mpho Chauke, a child in our sponsor-a-child project. This beautiful six year old girl suffered from severe eye problems due to allergies. She could hardly open her eyes for us to take a photo of her. We could not just let her suffer with something that we could help find treatment for.
We arranged to take her to an optometrist in Randfontein, from there we were referred to St. Johns Eye hospital in Soweto. We took her and her mother in, saw the specialists who gave her numerous eye drops and after a while there was already a difference. More medication was given to her and a follow up appointment was booked.
So far she is doing much better!

Christmas Presents!
At the end of last year we had a HUGE donation from The Toy Shop, so for a week our staff and a few volunteers had the fun task of giving out these beautiful presents and sweeties to the children in Rietvallei. The big smiles were more than enough thanks for us!

Comrades 2010 - Running with a purpose...
Make your run count!
Running the Comrades has huge personal significance for those that tackle the race. Now you can make it have greater significance for the lives of hundreds of orphaned and vulnerable children and use it to raise funds for food and other needed resources for these children.
In many international races/sporting events it is becoming increasingly popular to run for charity. Thousands of people make the effort of finding people to sponsor them as they run in order to make a difference.
We are looking to find those who want to make their race count for more than just personal achievement. If you have entered or if a family member, friends or colleagues are running, please tell them about this opportunity to run with a purpose.
Please contact us and we will send on the necessary forms.
