Providing Food to the Hungry
Harvest Aid has launched an exciting project which aims at increasing our grocery income and feeding capabilities tenfold. By involving regular donors in actively participating in the project we have already seen encouraging results. The “Bucket Project” may not be entirely original, but it is effective.
HA initially purchased 100 (14l) buckets. For each, a numbered label was printed and a list of suggested/ needed groceries placed inside. Each list comprises canned goods, soups, starches and other needed items to a value of R150. Participants are asked to also place R20 in an envelope to cover the administrative costs of the project.
Regular donors and other friends of HA were asked to take a number of buckets and to place them with friends, family, colleagues, church groups and with anyone willing to participate. Regulars can of course fill a bucket themselves. The idea is to have spare buckets ready to swap out for full ones as people bring them back.
We have purposefully not put a time limit on filling the bucket as some people can afford to do it quickly and others may need some time.
Although the project is only 3 Months old we are already very encouraged by the enthusiasm of everyone we have asked to participate. Both Modderfontein Primary School and the ProPracticum High School have welcomed the project and the staff of both schools have taken buckets. Several filled buckets have already been returned and our ability to feed more regularly at the various projects seems secure.
All our supporters are encouraged to get involved. If you haven't taken buckets yet please call Evangeline at 011-664-6149 to arrange for yours. Some supporters have taken either a single bucket for themselves or have volunteered to place multiple buckets with some taking as many as twenty for their Bible Study groups or even the staff at work. The number of buckets out after 3 months is over to 600. Over the next four months we want to place and rotate 1500 buckets in the community with your help.
Please get involved! Do you know of a church/group not yet involved in feeding - let us know and we will visit them.
